Esmail Qaani appointed as new Chief of Quds Force
The Supreme Leader of Iran, Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei has appointed Brigadier General Esmail Qaani to replace the former chief of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps unit Quds Force, Commander Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated during an airstrike by the United States on Friday, 3rd January 2020. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Leader of Iran has declared a three-day national mourning and also mentioned in a statement that the Quds Force program will remain unchanged.
The airstrike was conducted early morning on Friday when the 62-year-old Qassem Soleimani reportedly flown to the capital city of Iraq, Baghdad from Lebanon or Syria and was leaving the Baghdad international airport in his two cars convoy. The airstrike was conducted using a drone by the United States, which was later confirmed in a statement from the United States Department of Defence that the decisive defensive action was taken following the directions from the President, Donald Trump.
