ESA’s EnVision Mission to Study Venus
The European Space Agency (ESA) has officially confirmed the EnVision mission to explore Venus, which aims to deepen our understanding of Earth’s closest planetary neighbor. Scheduled to launch in 2031, EnVision will utilize advanced radar technology to penetrate Venus’s harsh surface conditions.
Mission Overview
EnVision is designed to be the first mission that employs radar to investigate the subsurface of Venus. The planning phase has concluded, and the spacecraft will be launched aboard an Ariane 6 rocket. This mission follows ESA’s earlier Venus Express mission, which operated from 2005 to 2014.
Scientific Objectives
The primary goal of EnVision is to address fundamental questions regarding Venus’s geological history and potential for life. Scientists aim to ascertain whether Venus ever harboured life and to understand the mechanisms that led to its hostile environment.
Venus’s Extreme Environment
Venus presents an extreme atmosphere, characterised by thick clouds of sulfuric acid and surface temperatures averaging 464 °C. The atmospheric pressure is about 92 times that of Earth. These conditions make it challenging to study the planet’s surface and internal structure.
EnVision will be equipped with various scientific instruments. It will carry three spectrometers to analyse atmospheric and surface gases, searching for signs of volcanic activity. A NASA-provided radar system will map the surface, while a radio experiment will investigate the planet’s internal structure.
Collaborative Efforts
EnVision will collaborate with two upcoming NASA missions, DAVINCI+ and VERITAS. This collaborative effort will provide a comprehensive understanding of Venus, examining the interactions between its surface, interior, and atmosphere.
The mission will also assess whether Venus remains geologically active. It will investigate the impact of volcanic activity, tectonics, and asteroid collisions on the planet’s surface, contributing to a holistic understanding of its geological processes.
