Eminent Classical Singer Sunanda Patnaik passes away

The 85-year old Veteran Indian classical singer of Gwalior Gharana, Sunanda Patnaik passed away on Sunday, 19th January 2020 at a private hospital in Kolkata following an illness. The singer was referred to as ‘Guruma’ by others in the music field in reverence. Known for her melodious voice, she is the recipient of various awards some of them are: Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi award twice in the years 1970 and 1971, Tagore Academy Puruskar in 2012. Her father was a famous poet in the state of Odisha- Baikunthanath Patnaik. She was trained at Pune under Pandit Vinayak Rao Pattavardhan and was awarded the degree of Masters in Music in 1956, in the following year 1957, she performed in the All India Sadrang Sangeet Sammelan in Calcutta.

Born in Odisha, she started her musical career as a singer in the All India Radio at the age of 14 in the year 1948, later the eminent singer moved to Kolkata in 1983 and launched a music institute named ‘Vishnu Vinayak Sangeet Ashram’.
