Eknath Shinde the new Chief of Shiv Sena

The Shiv Sena party of Maharashtra recently elected the Maharashtra Chief Minister as its new Chief. The decision was made during the National Executive Meeting of the party.

The party is a right-wing Marathi regionalist. It was founded by Balasaheb Thackeray. Their main focus is to get preferential status to the Marathis in the state as compared to the increasing number of migrants.

What is the issue?

Under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray (son of Balsaheb Thackeray), the party became secular and adopted nationalism. It formed an alliance with Congress. The party is usually more inclined towards BJP.  This deviated the party from its traditional stand. And eventually, the party split into two. One, under Shinde and the other, under Uddhav Thackeray. Eknath Shinde wanted to bring the party back to its original ideologies.

What is Uddhav Thackeray’s next move?

He has moved to the SC regarding the faction.

Background

Shinde and the other 40 MLAs withdrew their support to CM Uddhav Thackeray. They left for Assam creating high drama. Thackeray was supported only by 15 MLAs. And therefore, he resigned. After the resignation of Thackeray, they returned from Assam. It was expected that Devendra Fadnavis of BJP will become the next CM. But surprisingly Eknath Shinde became the CM!
