Effect of Climate Change on Gender-based Violence
A recent IUCN study, the largest and most comprehensive of its kind, highlighted the effects of climate change on gender-based violence.
- Effects Highlighted:
The study showed that climate change and environmental degradation are leading to increase in violence against women and girls. Incidents like domestic violence, forced marriages, rape etc. are increasing in many parts of the world. These are being fuelled by resource scarcity, droughts, desertification, etc.
- Jaboya System:
The study highlighted the prevalence of Jaboya System in the coastal region of Africa as an example of the effects of climate change on gender-based violence. Fish scarcity has triggered fishermen sexually exploiting women in exchange for their wares. World Vision is countering this by providing women opportunity to breed fishes in ponds.
- Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration:
The farmer managed natural regeneration (FMNR) is a reforestation technique that was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2018 (or Right Livelihood Award). It uses felled tree stumps and underground root system apart from seeds to increase the tree cover. The technique is used as a low cost land restoration method.
