K Durga Prasad appointed as DG of CRPF

Union Government has appointed senior IPS officer K Durga Prasad has Director General (DG) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Decision in this regard was taken by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

About K Durga Prasad

  • He is IPS officer of 1981 batch from Andhra Pradesh cadre.
  • Prior to this appointment he was serving as special director general of the CRPF.
  • Earlier he had served as Director of the Special Protection Group (SPG) which is nodal agency responsible to provide security to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers and their family members.

In another decision, ACC has appointed senior IPS officer K K Sharma as new Director General of Border Security Force (BSF). Prior to this appointment he was serving as Additional Director General (ADG) of BSF.

About Central Reserve Police Force (CRFP)

  • CRPF is the largest Central Armed Police Forces in India. It operates under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • It was established in 1939, under Crown Representative’s Police but after independence it was made statutory Central Reserve Police Force after the enactment of the CRPF Act, 1949.
  • At present CRPF is the world’s largest paramilitary force with 228 battalions and over three lakh personnel.
  • Its function primary role is to assist States/Union Territories (UTs) in police operations to maintain law and order and contain insurgency.
