Drinking Water for All by 2024
The Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Sing has stated that Centre has set a target of providing clean drinking water to all by 2024. The Ministry is formulating the plan to provide drinking water to nearly 14 crore households where clean drinking water is yet to reach.
Present Scenario
While in Sikkim 99 per cent of households get tapped water in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha the coverage is less than 5 per cent. Estimates suggest that nearly 81 per cent of total habitations in the country have a drinking water supply.
Replicating Jal Shakti in States
The Minister also urged the state governments to integrate water-related work under one single department for providing a holistic approach towards water supply and demand.
