DRDO’s New Bomb Detection Device
The new explosives detection device, named Raider X, was unveiled at the National Workshop on Explosive Detection 2020 in Pune.
- Features of the Device:
The Raider X can detect explosives from a stand-off distance of 2 metres. It can detect up to 20 explosives, including home-made ones. It can also detect bulk explosives that are concealed. The device’s data library can be updated to keep up with the evolving nature of home-made explosives. Both pure forms and contaminated forms of the explosives can be detected by it.
- Purpose of the Device:
The introduction of Raider-X is significant in light of the increasing use of home-made explosives by terrorists. Eg: those based on gelatin sticks and petrol. The device can be used by the local police, narcotics department, customs and other detection agencies.
- High Energy Materials Research Laboratory:
The Raider X device was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation along with the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. High Energy Materials Research Laboratory – an arm of the DRDO developed the device. Its main function is R&D in high energy materials and explosive materials. It is located in Pune.
