Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s Birthday Celebrated as “People’s Music Day” in Assam
- Numerous functions were organized in Assam, to mark the 86th birthday of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award winning multifaceted genius, legendary singer, poet and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika
- The day was observed as the ‘People’s Music Day’ (Gana Sangitor din) all over Assam
- Bhupen Hazarika has been the only person in the past 40 years to propagate the better cinema movement for integrating all the seven north-eastern states, including tribal culture
- Born in 1926 at Sadiya in Assam, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is a stalwart in the archives of India’s cultural heritage today. A versatile genius, he is a good poet, music composer, singer, actor, journalist, author and film-maker of the very highest status. He is the only living trailblazer of Assam’s film industry in the Northeast, and has been therefore, justly acclaimed as the uncrowned king of North-Eastern India’s cultural world. In 1999, he was appointed by the Honourable President of India as the Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi for a period of five years.
