DPS Flamingo Lake Designated as Conservation Reserve

The Maharashtra State Wildlife Board has recently declared DPS Flamingo Lake a conservation reserve. This landmark decision marks the first time a wetland connected to the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary has received such protection. The approval occurred during a board meeting led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This initiative aims to safeguard the fragile wetland ecosystem of Navi Mumbai.

DPS Flamingo Lake

DPS Flamingo Lake spans 30 acres and serves as important resting and feeding ground for flamingos migrating from the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. The lake is particularly vital during high tide when flamingos seek refuge.

Environmental Concerns

The lake faced serious threats when construction activities nearby blocked tidal inlets, leading to the death of 17 flamingos. This prompted the formation of a committee to address the environmental crisis. To address this, the tidal inlets were reopened, and the pipes were realigned to restore water flow.

Restoration Efforts

Efforts to restore the lake have shown promising results. Forest department officials reported that nearly 60 per cent of the algae-choked water body has been cleared. This restoration has allowed flamingos to return in numbers.

Future Risks and Considerations

Experts have warned that losing such wetlands could lead flamingos to approach areas near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. This poses a risk of bird strikes, which could endanger both wildlife and aviation safety. The airport’s environmental impact assessment acknowledges these concerns and commits to following expert recommendations.
