DPIIT to launch Plastic Waste Management Campaign

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry,  is set to launch Plastic Waste Management Campaign on 11 September 2019. The campaign will be launched under Swachhta Hi Sewa 2019 which is beginning from 11 September.

As part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to action for Plastic Waste Management, during his Independence Day speech the theme of this year’s Swachhta Hi Sewa 2019 is ‘Plastic Waste Management’.

DPIIT is playing a critical two-fold role for success of campaign as mandated by Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under Ministry of Jal Shakti. Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has also requested DPIIT to mandate the use of plastic waste by cement kilns and DPIIT will ensure that all collected plastic waste may be recycled in cement kilns by Diwali 2019.

About Plastic Waste Management Campaign

Under the PWM campaign DPIIT will-

  • First ensure recycling of plastic waste collected on 2 October 2019 (Birth anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi) in cement kilns, and
  • Secondly ensure collection of plastic waste on and around industrial areas all across country through nationwide shramdaan on 2nd October 2019.

For this DPIIT has urged all State Governments and Union Territories (UTs) to mobilise Industrial Parks in States and UTs for collection of plastic waste across all Industrial Estates, Industrial Areas, Parks, Nodes and Corridors for Swachhta hi Sewa 2019.

DPIT has also requested state governments to sensitize Industrial Parks by focusing on Plastic Waste Management on a sustained and continuous basis. State and UTs Governments will monitor the campaign through their nodal teams to be set up by them.
