District Good Governance Index

The District Good Governance Index was released by the Home Minister Amit Shah. The index was released for the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The index was prepared by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances.

About the Index

The top five districts in the index were Jammu, Doda, Samba, Pulwama and Srinagar. The index was formulated using 58 indicators and 116 data points.

What are the indicators used in the index?

The indicators were used from the following sectors:

  • Agriculture and allied activities: 11
  • Commerce and Industry: 5
  • Human Resource Development: 9
  • Public Health: 9
  • Public infrastructure and utilities: 6
  • Social Welfare and Development: 6
  • Financial Inclusion: 3
  • Judiciary and Public Safety: 4
  • Environment: 2
  • Citizen centric governance: 3

Top Performers

  • The Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kahsmir topped the index in agriculture sector.
  • The Jammu district topped the index in two sectors namely citizen centric governance and commerce and industries.
  • Pulwama topped in the index in Human and Resource Development
  • Reasi topped the index in public health
  • Srinagar topped in public infrastructure
  • Ramban topped the index in social welfare
  • Ganderbal topped the index in financial inclusion
  • Shopian topped in Environment
  • Doda topped the index in Judicial and Public safety

Overall Ranking

The Ganderbal district stood at sixth place. Ganderbal was followed by Anantnag, Baramulla, Kathua and Kupwara at seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth places respectively.

The last ten districts in the ranking were Kishtwar at 11th spot, Budgam at 12th spot, Udhampur at 13th spot, Reasi at the 14th, Bandipora at the 15th spot, Ramban was at 16th rank, Kulgam at 17th spot, Shopian at 18th spot, Poonch at 19th and Rajouri at 20th spot.

Significance

The ranking will bring healthy competition among the states. The index provides useful information and enables the district administration to create appropriate strategies to improve services and ease of living.
