What is ‘Disease X’?
Disease X is a new illness causing alarm in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has flu-like symptoms, and has a high mortality rate. The World Health Organization (WHO) is actively managing the outbreak.
Outbreak Overview
Since October, approximately 406 cases of Disease X have been reported. There are 143 confirmed deaths, primarily affecting children. Local health officials indicate that the situation is critical.
The outbreak is concentrated in a remote area of Kwango province. Accessibility is severely limited due to poor road conditions and heavy rainfall. Health teams may require up to two days to reach the affected regions.
Malnutrition Complications
Many affected individuals are suffering from severe malnutrition, which complicates the diagnosis and hampers understanding of the disease’s origin. Critical cases often involve malnourished patients, making it difficult for health professionals to assess the situation accurately.
WHO’s Response
The WHO has deployed a team to the outbreak area. Their objectives include collecting samples and investigating transmission methods. They are also visiting health centres and local communities to identify new cases.
Initial research indicates that fatalities may also be associated with other prevalent diseases. These include pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, measles, and malaria. The potential for multiple illnesses contributing to the death toll is under investigation.
Symptoms of Disease X
Common symptoms include fever, headache, cough, runny nose, body aches, breathing difficulties, and anemia. The DRC’s Ministry of Health confirms 31 deaths directly attributed to Disease X, while local estimates suggest the total death toll is much higher at 143.
