Discuss the meaning of negligence as a tort?

In the law of torts, negligence has two meaning:-

(i) Negligence as a mode of committing certain tort e.g. trespass nuisance or defamation. In this sense negligence involves certain mental elements on the part of the defendant.

(ii) negligence as an independent tort. In this sense it means a conduct which causes damage without anything in mind. Thus it is conduct rather than a state of mind.
