Digital Forensic Laboratories

Digital Forensic science identifies, processes, acquires and reports electronic evidence. This includes data capturing, emails, smartphone analytics, hard disk retrieval, and other computer analysis tools. With the GST evasions increasing in the country, DGCI has joined hands with NFSU to launch Digital Forensic Laboratories. They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish Digital Forensic Laboratories in the country.

What are Digital Forensic Laboratories?

They perform analysis and investigations on electronic evidence. This may be bank accounts, online transactions, mobile communication, computer files, etc.

Need for Digital Forensic Laboratories

In the past three years, tax authorities discovered Rs 62,000 crores of GST evasion. This was done using fake invoices. GoI struggling with the deficit, it is essential to curb such evasions. The Digital Forensic Laboratories will help DGCI fight against tax evasion in the country.

About the MoU

The MoU to create Digital Forensics Laboratories was signed between the National forensics Science University and the Directorate General of GST Intelligence. The DGCI works under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, CBIC. The main role and responsibilities of DGCI are to collect information on tax evasion and disseminate them to CBIC. With this CBIC will take action and make necessary measures to reduce such instances.
