Delhi’s Summer Action Plan
On May 1, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched an action plan to combat air pollution during the summer months in Delhi. The main objective of the summer strategy is to manage the problem of dust pollution, which has significantly contributed to the decline of the city’s air quality. The Delhi government already has an action plan in place to combat air pollution in winter months, which focuses on stubble burning, firecracker pollution, and industrial and vehicular emissions.
Implementation
In order to address the problem of dust pollution in the summer months, the Delhi administration has acquired a total of 84 mechanical road sweepers, 609 water sprinklers, and 185 mobile anti-smog guns. Additionally, the government is procuring 70 integrated road sweeping machines and 250 integrated water sprinklers to further improve the air quality. Teams have been established to patrol industrial areas and monitor activities such as open burning of garbage, dumping of waste, and dust pollution. During the day and night, 225 and 159 teams, respectively, will monitor dust pollution in the city.
Real-time Source Apportionment Studies at 13 Air Pollution Hotspots
Thirteen air pollution hotspots will undergo real-time source apportionment studies. These studies help identify factors responsible for the increase in air pollution at any spot, such as vehicles, dust, biomass burning, and emissions from industries. The information gathered from these studies will be used to take preventive measures accordingly.
Construction Sites Monitored to Check Dust Pollution
Construction sites with an area exceeding 500 square meters will be under close surveillance to prevent dust pollution. Moreover, a standard operating procedure has been prepared to prevent fire incidents at landfill sites, and a plan is being prepared for the scientific disposal of industrial waste.
Beautifying Parks and Creating an E-waste Eco Park
The Delhi government is working in tandem with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to revive and beautify parks in the city. Around 3,500 parks in Delhi greater than half an acre will be beautified by December this year, and 17,000 parks under the MCD will be beautified by March next year. Additionally, a first-of-its-kind e-waste eco park is being created in Holambi Kalan for effective management of e-waste.
