Delhi’s free internet scheme
The Delhi government recently announced free internet connectivity in early December. The government is to set up hotspots for providing basic internet connectivity to its population. The scheme is being implemented at the cost of 100 crore INR by the government. The implementation is by a company called Presto through the PPP or public- private partnership model. The network will provide free internet up to 1.5 GB data. The WiFi can be accessed with a 50m radius from the hotspot. A dedicated mobile app is also being developed for the purpose. The scheme is to see the installation of 11,000 hotspots across the capital. The first 100 hotspots are to be installed on 16th December and 500 more will be installed every week after that. The hotspot installation process is to be completed by the end of 6 months (May, 2020).
