Delhi Government Increases Minimum Wages for Workers

The Delhi government has implemented increase in minimum wages for workers across various categories. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the new wage structure takes effect from April 1, 2025. This decision aims to alleviate the financial burden on workers amid persistent inflation.

Wage Rate Details

The revised wage rates cater to different skill levels. Unskilled workers will earn ₹18,456 monthly, up from ₹18,066. Semi-skilled workers will now receive ₹20,371, an increase from ₹19,929. Skilled workers, including non-matriculates, will see their pay rise to ₹22,411 from ₹21,917. Graduates and those with higher qualifications will earn ₹24,356, up from ₹23,836.

Rationale Behind the Increase

The wage hike is designed to protect workers’ purchasing power. With rising costs of living in Delhi, the government recognises the need for fair compensation. This increase is a proactive measure to ensure that workers can cope with inflationary pressures.

Legal Provisions for Underpayment

To address potential wage discrepancies, the government has established a mechanism for workers earning below the new minimum rates. Affected workers can file claims with the Joint Labour Commissioner or Deputy Labour Commissioner in their districts. These officials are authorised under the Minimum Wages Act of 1948 to resolve wage-related disputes.

Government’s Commitment to Workers

The Delhi government has reiterated its commitment to support workers, particularly those in low-paying jobs. The wage revision reflects an ongoing effort to enhance the quality of life for workers in essential sectors. The government aims to protect workers from exploitation and ensure compliance with the new wage standards.

Broader Economic Context

The decision to raise minimum wages comes as inflation continues to impact various sectors of the economy. This move is part of a larger strategy to boost the financial stability of workers in a rapidly growing economic hub like Delhi.
