Delhi gets its first ‘Smog Tower’

In view of the alarming pollution levels in the capital city of India, in November 2019, the Supreme Court of India to combat air pollution has directed the Central Government along with the Delhi Government for the installation of Smog Towers across the National Capital Region (NCR). On Thursday, 2nd January 2, 2020, the first Smog Tower was installed in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar central market with the help of former cricketer and Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from East Delhi, Gautam Gambhir by the Traders Association Lajpat Nagar (TALN).

The cost of the 20-ft-tall Smog Tower is around Rs 7 Lakh, which is procured by the Gautam Gambhir Foundation, and will have a running cost of Rs 30,000 that will be borne by the Lajpat Nagar Traders’ Association.  The Smog Tower will bring down pollution levels by removing 80% of particulate matter from the air and is capable of treating between 2,50,000 to 6,00000 cubic meter air per day.
