Delhi Extends Property Geotagging Deadline

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has extended the deadline for property geotagging in Delhi to February 29th, 2024. This process was previously required to be completed by January 31st.

What is Geotagging?

Geotagging refers to attaching geographic information like latitude and longitude to media such as photos. For properties, it means digitally mapping them to identify their location.

Key Highlights

  • New Deadline: The new deadline for property owners to complete geotagging is February 29th, 2024.
  • Reason for Extension: Technical difficulties faced by people using the MCD app, especially iPhone users, led to the deadline extension.
  • Refund Incentive: Completing geotagging by the deadline makes property owners eligible for 10% refund on their advance tax payments.

Benefits of Geotagging

Geotagging properties can enable several benefits:

  • Curb Tax Evasion: It will help distinguish between tax-paying and non-tax-paying properties to boost tax collection.
  • Identify Violations: Illegal constructions and unauthorized colonies can be easily spotted.
  • Improve Civic Services: Location-based information allows targeted service delivery related to sanitation, road repairs etc.

Concerns Around the Exercise

Many citizens have complained about facing difficulties with the self-geotagging process. Lack of awareness about the technical protocols and intended benefits have added to their doubts.

Other Cities Exploring Geotagging

Various other Indian cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad have undertaken geo-tagging drives for properties, manholes, trees etc. to enable better urban planning and service delivery.
