Daman to be Headquarters of the Merged Union Territory

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi chaired Union Cabinet on Wednesday, 22nd January 2020 designated that the city of Daman will be the headquarters of the newly constituted Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Daman is a city in the erstwhile UT Daman & Diu, located on the west coast of India. Addressing the press after the meeting, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar informed that in view of the merger, amendments and repeal in Acts dealing with the tax system (GST, VAT and Excise Duty) have been approved by the Cabinet.

Two separate Union Territories of India, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli were merged to a single Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu last month during the winter session of the Parliament following the bill for the merger of the Union Territories was passed by the Parliament. Silvassa was the previous capital of the erstwhile Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
