- Devasahayam Pillai, who embraced Christianity in the 18th century, became the first Indian layman to be declared a saint by Pope Francis during an impressive canonisation ceremony at the Vatican.
- Guru Ravidas was a poet of the bhakti movement. He is believed to be a disciple of the bhakti saint-poet Ramananda and a contemporary of the bhakti saint-poet Kabir. One of his famous disciples was the saint, Mirabai. He conceptualized “Begampura”, a city that knows no sorrow; and a society where caste and class have ceased to matter.
- Sree Narayana Guru was one of the greatest proponents and re-evaluators of Advaita Vedanta, the principle of non-duality put forward by Adi Shankara.
