The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Sela macaque (Macaca selai) was geographically separated from the Arunachal macaque (Macaca munzala) of Tawang district by Sela. Phylogenetics relate to the evolutionary development and diversification of a species or group of organisms. It has NOT been yet included in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 of India.
- Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have found a new mammal species in the country — the White Cheeked Macaque (Macaca leucogenys). While the species was first discovered in China in 2015. Both the Arunachal macaque as well as the White Cheeked Macaque exist in the same biodiversity hotspot in the eastern Himalayas.
- Lion Tailed Macaque (Macaca Silenus) is endemic to rainforests of the Western Ghats. It is listed as Endangered on IUCN Red List. It is listed in Appendix 1 of CITES. It is a Schedule 1 species under WPA, 1972.
