Hundreds sheltered in evacuation centers after Mount Kanlaon erupted in the central Philippines. Mount Kanlaon, a 2435m stratovolcano on Negros Island, is the highest mountain on the island and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Known for its pyroclastic cones and craters, the biologically diverse volcano has erupted multiple times since 1886, with phreatic explosions causing minor ashfalls. It influences major river systems on Negros Island.

The US tested an unarmed Minuteman III ICBM from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The Minuteman III, deployed in the 1960s, is the sole land-based component of the US nuclear triad, designed by Boeing. Despite initial plans for a ten-year service, it will be used until the GBSD is available in 2029. The three-stage, solid-fuel missile, with a 13,000 km range, currently carries a single nuclear warhead, ensuring fast launch and high reliability.

Thismia malayana, a newly discovered mycoheterotrophic plant in Peninsular Malaysia’s rainforests, steals nutrients from underground fungi instead of performing photosynthesis. It thrives in low-light forest understories, with specialized flowers pollinated by fungus gnats. Typically 2 cm long, it grows near tree roots or rotten logs and is highly sensitive to environmental changes, earning a Vulnerable status on the IUCN Red List.

The first human case of H5N2 avian flu has been reported in Mexico City, involving a 59-year-old man who died. Bird flu, caused by the Avian Influenza A virus, primarily infects poultry and wild birds but can jump to humans through direct contact. H5N2, a subtype first reported in Mexican poultry, spreads through migratory bird patterns and interactions with domestic birds. Environmental changes also influence its spread.
