Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched ‘Mukhyamantri COVID-19 Pariwar Aarthik Sahayata Yojana’, a social security scheme to provide financial assistance to families who lost their kins to COVID-19.
Under the scheme, Rs 50,000 ex gratia will be given to every family that lost a member to COVID-19 and an additional Rs 2,500 per month will be given if the deceased was the sole breadwinner. The Chief Minister also launched a portal for the scheme.

India hosted the BRICS Education Ministers 2021. This meeting is being held as part of the 13th BRICS Summit being hosted by India this year.
Sanjay Dhotre, Minister of State for Education, chaired the meeting of the 8th BRICS Education Ministers in virtual mode. Education Ministers from the five BRICS member states resolved to enhance academic collaboration in higher education

‘Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam’ is set to be Africa’s largest hydroelectric project when completed. As per Egypt and Sudan, Ethiopia has started the second phase of filling the dam’s reservoir on the upper Blue Nile.
UN Security Council is set to conduct a meeting on the issue shortly. Ethiopia says the project is essential to its development, while Egypt and Sudan fear it could restrict the water access of their citizens.

Stan Swamy, the Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist spent nine months in custody after being booked under the UAPA, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act
UAPA is the primary counter-terror law in India. Though it was originally enacted in 1967, the law has undergone over 6 amendments, the last one in 2019. Stan Swamy was among the 16 activists, academics, and lawyers booked and arrested for their alleged links to Maoists in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence.

Bagram Airfield is the key base of the military troops of the United States in Afghanistan. Recently, the US military left Bagram Airfield in the night without notifying the Afghans, as per the base’s new commander.
The Taliban are said to be advancing rapidly in Afghanistan as US troops withdraw. The Afghan forces were even expecting the Taliban to attack Bagram.
