Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the annual meeting of Defence Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Apart from India, the Foreign Ministers of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan also participated in the meeting. The preparations for the forthcoming SCO Summit of Heads of State in Samarkand were also discussed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been named for this year’s ‘Liberty Medal’ by the National Constitution Center.
He was selected for his heroic defense of liberty in the face of Russian tyranny. Zelenskyy has been serving as the nation’s President since May 2019, has also been the recipient of awards such as the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award and the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award as well as honors from other governments.

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) organizes World Water Week every year. This year, it is celebrated from August 23 to September 1.
The theme for World Water Week 2022 is ‘Seeing the Unseen: The Value of Water’. It is a movement aimed at transforming the global water challenges.

Bangladesh-born Fahmida Azim working for the Insider online magazine of United States has been selected for the 2022 Pulitzer prize.
She is among the four journalists of Insider, selected for their work on the Chinese oppression of the Uyghurs.  She has been selected under the category of Illustrated Reporting and Commentary, for her illustrations in the work ‘I escaped a Chinese internment Camp’.

Notes:
Antim Panghal became the first Indian female wrestler ever to clinch gold at the Under 20 Wrestling World Championships.
She topped the 53kg category in the World Championships being held in Sofia, Bulgaria. The only other Indians to win gold at the U20 World Championships are Deepak Punia (2019) Ramesh Kumar (2001) Palwinder Singh Cheema (2001) and Pappu Yadav (1992).
