CWG 2022: Indian Team wins gold in Lawn Bowl

India’s lawn bowls women’s fours team won gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, creating history by winning India’s first ever medal in lawn bowls event. The team of lawn bowls comprised of skipper Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki, Lovely Choubey, and Nayanmoni Saikia.  They won the title after beating 2018 silver medallists South Africa with a 17-10 victory. This was the first appearance of Indian team in the women’s fours format of the lawn bowls finals.

India at Commonwealth Games 2022:

  • The Commonwealth Games 2022 is being held in Birmingham, England from July 28-August 8 2022.
  • India is participating for the 18th time in the Commonwealth Games, with the contingent comprising of 322 members.
  • So far, India has won 9 medals, comprising of 3 Golds, 3 Silvers, and 3 Bronze medals.
  • Most of the medals are from weightlifting category.
  • India’s first gold medal came for Mirabai Chanu in Weightlifting women’s 49kg category.
  • In this edition of the Commonwealth Games, women’s cricket has been included for the first time. Indian women’s Cricket team has lost the first match against Australia. However, they defeated Pakistan by 8 wickets.

In the Medal Tally, India is at 6th place currently. Australia is ranked first with 52 medals, including 22 Gold medals, 13 silver medals, and 17 Bronze medals.
