National Science Day is celebrated on February 28 in India to recognise the contributions of scientists towards the development of the country
In 1928, Indian Physicist CV Raman made an important discovery in the field of spectroscopy which was named the Raman Effect. The theme of National Science Day 2022 is ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future’.

Notes:
The Government has appointed Madhabi Puri Buch as the new chairperson of market regulator -Securities and Exchange Board of India.
She is the first woman chairperson of SEBI. Ms Madhabi Puri Buch, the former head of ICICI Securities, replaces Ajay Tyagi. Mr Tyagi, a 1984 batch IAS officer, was appointed as SEBI Chairperson in 2017.

The Office of Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade releases Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI).
The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stood at 144.4 in January 2022, at an increase of 3.7 per cent from that of January 2021. The production of Coal, Natural Gas, Refinery Products, Steel, Cement and Electricity industries increased in January 2022, the other two being Crude Oil and Fertilizers.

Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), was launched by the Union Minister of Defence in 2018. It provides a unified platform for various stakeholders in the defence and aerospace sector.
iDEX has launched Defence India Startup Challenges (DISC) and Open Challenges (OC). iDEX is set to showcase its startups and award its winner during its flagship event Manthan in the upcoming DefExpo 2022.

Bhupender Yadav, Union minister of environment, forests and climate change, released Centre for Science and Environment –Down To Earth’s Annual State of India’s Environment Report 2022. This was released at the Anil Agarwal Dialogue organised by Delhi-based non-profit Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).
As per the report, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are below the national average in 11 and 14 SDGs, respectively. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh fared best in SDGs.

The aggressive Russian attack on Ukraine puts at risk several works of art, cultural artefacts, and monuments.
It includes the ‘Museum of Freedom’ and ‘Odessa Fine Arts Museum’. Ukraine also has seven world heritage sites, including St Sophia Cathedral, Kyiv, and Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, or Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, an Orthodox Christian monastery founded in 1051.

The United Nations Environment Programme coordinates responses to environmental issues within the UN system. It was formed after the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in June 1972. UNEP is headquartered at Nairobi, Kenya.
The UNEP is set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its creation in a special two-day session of the UN Environment Assembly.

MyGov, which is the Government of India’s citizen engagement platform has launched “Sabka Vikas MahaQuiz” series commencing from 1st March 2022. This quiz would continue for the entire year and comprise 14 episodes.
This initiative aims to build awareness amongst citizens about good governance, various government schemes and initiatives.

Notes:
Meghalaya has recently withdrawn consent to the CBI to investigate cases in the state, becoming the ninth state in the country to have taken this step. CBI will not be able to investigate cases in the state without the state government’s permission.
Mizoram was the first state to withdraw consent in 2015. The other states that have withdrawn consent are Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Kerala

Notes:
‘Glycosmis albicarpa’, a new gin berry species, was recently discovered from Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu.
A team of scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) has discovered the species with a distinct large white fruit. The species is endemic to the southern Western Ghats and it belongs to the Orange family, Rutaceae.
