GoI to create a permanent body to control air pollution in Delhi

On October 26, 2020, the Government of India informed the supreme court that it will soon legislate a permanent body to handle the air pollution problems in Delhi. The body is mainly focus on pollution caused due to stubble burning.

Highlights

On October 16, 2020, the Supreme Court of India had appointed a one-man committee under justice Madan lokur to monitor the measures taken by the state governments in the adjoining states of the national capital region including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to prevent stubble burning.

Background

According to the central pollution control board, the air quality index of several regions of Delhi stood at 405 marking them as “severe category” regions.

Air quality index

If air quality index is between 0 and 50 then it is marked as good. If it is between 51 and hundred it is marked as satisfactory. If air quality index is between 101 and 200 it is marked as moderate. If it is between 201 and 300 it is marked as poor and if between 301 and 400 is marked as very poor. For Air quality index between 401 and 500 it is marked as severe category.

Delhi Pollution Control Committee

This committee is currently responsible to monitor the pollution levels of the national capital region. However, the committee takes care of overall pollution including air pollution, water pollution in the national capital region. Therefore, the Government of India is to setup a permanent body that will look after only the air pollution of Delhi.

The need

According to the World Health Organisation, Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world out of 1650 cities surveyed. According to the organisation. the Delhi Pollution is capable of creating Irreversible damages to Lungs of more than 2.2 million. This includes 50 percentage of children.
