Florence Nightingale Award
The President of India conferred the National Florence Nightingale Award to the nursing personnel on December 5th. The award is a recognition of meritorious service conferred to individuals in the nursing profession. The President termed the profession as ‘symbol of seva, shushrusha and karuna’. He also called them the ‘face of healthcare service’. The President also highlighted the increasing need for health care providers given our changing lifestyle. He also highlighted the importance of basic geriatric care training given the increasing number of the senior citizens requiring quality care.
World Health Organization declared 2020 to be the ‘Year of the Nurse and Mid Wife’. The International Nurses day is observed on 12th of May which marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, after whom the award is named. The theme of 2019 International Nurses Day, which marks the nurses’ contribution to the society, is ‘Health for All’.
