International Literacy Day: September 8
- UNs’ International Literacy Day is observed every year on 8th September since 1966
- Theme for the year 2009-2011 of the UN Literacy Decade: “Literacy and Empowerment”
- The day highlights the importance of literacy in areas such as health and education
- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its partners promote the day to underline the significance of literacy for healthy societies, with a strong emphasis on epidemics and communicable diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria
- Year 1990 was marked as the “International Literacy Year” by the UN General Assembly
New Kerala Governor: Mr. M.O.H. Farooq
- Shri M O H Farooq took over as the Governor of Kerala
- Mr Farooq, three time chief minister of Puducherry, had also served as Governor of Jharkhand and Union minister
Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s Birthday Celebrated as “People’s Music Day” in Assam
- Numerous functions were organized in Assam, to mark the 86th birthday of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award winning multifaceted genius, legendary singer, poet and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika
- The day was observed as the ‘People’s Music Day’ (Gana Sangitor din) all over Assam
- Bhupen Hazarika has been the only person in the past 40 years to propagate the better cinema movement for integrating all the seven north-eastern states, including tribal culture
New Governor of Madhya Pradesh: Ram Naresh Yadav
- Mr. Ram Naresh Yadav took charge as the new Governor of Madhya Pradesh
- Mr. Yadav replaced incumbent governor Rameshwar Thakur
Step up in the management of hydrocarbon exploration needed: CAG
- CAG in its report has urged for a larger role of Centre in operational control and high value procurement decisions and suggested for improvement in the management of hydrocarbon exploration and production
- The report even pointed that the profit sharing method is not perfect and stressed the demand to change the method which was designed in the late 1990s
- It suggested that development plans should be considered from financial perspectives also apart from technical aspects
- It urged for yearly work programmes and opined that the budgets should be strictly in line with the approved development plans
Mechanisms set up to prevent imports for Chinese products
- Government to establish various institutionalized mechanisms in order to avoid imports of Chinese products
- Micro and small enterprises in India are unjustly affected by the Chinese products
- Government has referred the concerns of the Small Scale Industries Association on the issue of imports of Chinese products to the Director General of Anti Dumping and allied duties for examination
10 MP districts to implement the “Sakshar Bharat Yojna”
- “Sakshar Bharat Yojna” is being carried out in 10 districts in MP in the initial phase to eliminate illiteracy
- Objective: To boost literacy rate to 80% in the particular 10 districts
- Via this scheme, efforts are being made to lessen the gap b/w male and female literacy up to 10%
- The 10 districts are: Betul, Datia, Jhabua, Katni, Khargone, Mandla, Mandsaur, Morena, Sheopur and Tikamgarh
PM Dr. Manmohan Singh and his wife Ms Gursharan Kaur pledge to donate eyes
- On the occasion of the “National Eye Donation Day”, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur have pledged to donate their eyes by signing the pledge form
- As per the Doctors, of over 4.5 million visually challenged persons in India, nearly three million can gain their sight through cornea transplant
- Restore of vision among the corneally-blind can happen via the Eye donation
- More than 400 organisations are registered with Eye Bank Association of India
- These Organizations are airing consciousness about eye donation and alleviating eye donation
- A Toll Free number 1919 has been furnished by BSNL and MTNL in India to ease access to the nearby eye bank
Yahoo fires its CEO, Ms Carol Bartz
- Mr. Roy Bostock, Yahoo’s Chairman, fired the Yahoo’s CEO Carol Bartz
- Due to her dismal performance, the decision was taken over by the Yahoo board
- Yahoo’s CFO Timothy Morse took over as interim CEOw
- Ms Bartz, was made CEO in 2009 to replace co-founder and then CEO Jerry Yang after he resigned in 2008
- Her term however botched to bring in a large amount course and success for Yahoo in the last few years
- Revenue and earnings began to slip for Yahoo
- Yahoo’s brand also become fuzzy as Ms Bartz announced a swing towards being a digital media leader with original content in early 2011
