Selja concerned about safety of Tagores’ Jorasanko house

• Expressing concern over the structural safety of the Tagores’ ancestral house in northern Kolkata’s Jorasanko where Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was born and died, Union Culture Minister Selja Sunday said the building needed more renovation.

Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) celebrated all over country

• Id-ul-Zuha, a festival observed in commemoration of Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim, for his unflinching devotion to Allah. The festival celebrated to remember the selflessness of Ibrahim who came forward to sacrifice his son. Id-ul-Zuha symbolises the spirit of sacrifice, manifested by unshakeable faith and firm commitment. The day also reminds us the need to foster peace and harmony among all and to care for the disadvantaged sections of society.

Trivandrum City to be declared first ‘Nokkukooli-Free’ place

• This capital city of Kerala will be declared the first Nokkukooli-free place in the state by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on November 9. Thiruvananthapuram City would be announced as the first Nokkukooli-Free place — the unhealthy practice of demanding money for allowing others to do loading and unloading work.

Veteran Gujarati poet ‘Ushnas’ is dead

• Veteran Gujarati poet Natvarlal Kuberbhai Pandya Ushnas passed away. He was 91. Ushnas did Masters in Gujarati literature and served as a teacher and then professor at various places in Gujarat.
• Natvarlal, who started writing poetry at a very early age, was instrumental in heralding a new wave in Gujarati poetry. His first poetry collection published was Prasoon(1955), followed by Nepathye(1956), Aardra(1959), Manomudra(1960), Trun no grah(1964), Spand ane Chhand(1968), Kinkini(1971), Bharat darshan(1974), Ashvatth(1975), Rupana Lay(1976), Vyakul Vaishnav(1977), Pruthvine Paschim Chahere(1979) and Shishulok(1984). He received many awards and accolades during his lifetime for his contribution to literature. He received prestigious Narmad gold medal in 1971 and Ranjitram gold medal in 1972. He also received coveted Kendriya Sahitya Akademi award in 1976.
