6th International Film Festival begins in Kerala

  • The sixth International Film Festival, (TIFF-2011) began in Kerala. 68 films from 18 countries would be screened. In the World Film Cateogry films from the US, China, Germany, France and Palestine would be screened. Besides this, films from various Indian languages would also be screened in the Indian film section.

Longest route train to be flagged off tomorrow

  • “Vivek Express” a new weekly train that will cover the longest ever train route in the country will be flagged off from eastern Assam s Dibrugarh tomorrow. The train will run between Dibrugarh and Kanyakumari, covering a distance of 4286 km.

Civil Services coaching for minorities at MANUU

  • Civil Services Examination Coaching Academy at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad will provide coaching for CSE and other services to students from Minority and Women. Academy would start coaching classes for Civil Services (Prelims) from January 2012 for five months. A total of 100 candidates would be shortlisted and 40 per cent of the seats would be reserved for women candidates. The fee would be very nominal and a stipend would be available to 20% of the admitted candidates on basis of merit-cum-means.

Indian member re-elected to global law panel

  • The United Nations General Assembly re-elected Narinder Singh as a member of the International Law Commission for a five-year term beginning January 1. The other candidates elected from the Asia-Pacific Group belong to Japan, China, Jordan, South Korea, Indonesia, Qatar and Thailand.
  • Mr Singh has been a member of the Commission since 2007 and has contributed extensively to its work. He is currently the Legal Adviser and Head of the Legal and Treaties Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, a position he has held since 2003.

Andhra ‘laddu’ enters Guinness World Records

  • A huge 5,570-kg ‘laddu’ prepared for the recent Ganesh festival in Andhra Pradesh entered the Guinness World Records.

Sports bill to be introduced in Winter Session of Parliament

  • Sports Minister Ajay Maken expressed hope of introducing the Sports Bill in the upcoming winter session of Parliament beginning from November 22. The Sports Bill, aimed at ushering transparency and accountability in the functioning of National Sports Federations (NSF) by bringing them under the purview of the RTI Act, was earlier rejected by the Cabinet, which asked the Sports Minister to rework on it.

Induction of LCA Tejas delayed; to be operationised by 2014

  • Operationalisation of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LAC) Tejas is likely to be delayed by 2014 because of the rains and some technical issues there has been delay in the project.
