Wangala dance begins in Meghalaya

  • The Hundred Drums or Wangala Festival of the tribal Garos began at Asanang village in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district .The Wangala is the most important post-harvest festival of the Garos and is a thanksgiving ceremony to Misi Saljong and Minima Rokkime , also known as the Great Giver. The festival first started in the year 1976 at Asanang and since then it is being held every year in the second week of November.

SAARC: India announces major trade liberalisation effort

  • At the 17th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit at the Addu Atoll in the Maldives, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced that in a major trade liberalisation effort, India has issued a notification to reduce the Sensitive List for the Least Developed Countries under the South Asian Free Trade Area Agreement from 480 tariff lines to 25 tariff lines.

Supersonic BrahMos Block-II missile regiment inducted

  • Aas part of the Army s pro-active conventional war strategy that provisions for multiple armoured thrusts by self-contained battle groups across the border, Army inducted a fresh regiment of the Block-II 300-km strike range supersonic BrahMos cruise missile to its inventory. It has already been approved by the Government to counter China s huge military infrastructure build-up along the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control (LAC). A similar induction of the new BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles has also been approved for the western sector – on the Pakistan side. Its advanced version, Block-III, yet to be inducted, has steep dive capability to take out targets hidden even behind a mountain range. The BrahMos Block-I regiment was first inducted by the Army in 2007.

Tamil Nadu launches India’s First Road Accident Investigation System

  • Tamil Nadu launched the Road Accident Investigation System, a first- of-its-kind in the country, for the benefit of traffic police to provide timely help to accident victims. The system, with GPS data, would help the traffic police locate the accident site and rush Ambulance, Fire service, Medical and other emergency services to the accident victims.

Indian n-plants absolutely safe: Atomic panel chief

  • Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chairman Srikumar Banerjee said that All Indian nuclear plants are “absolutely safe”, and indicated that people living around the upcoming Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu could have been “misled”.

Gambhir to donate his body parts

  • Ace Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir Thursday pledged to donate his body organs to a Delhi hospital after his death.
