2009 India-Nepal Treaty of Trade and Agreement of Cooperation to Control Unauthorized Trade was signed in Kathmandu by Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma and his Nepalese counterpart Rajendra Mahto.
Salient Features:
- Raising the number of trade points from existing 22 to 26 between the two nations
- Provision of duty-free access without any quantitative restrictions to Nepalese exports to India such as floriculture products, wheat flour, bran, husk, bristles, herbs, stone aggregates, boulder, sand and gravel.
- The increase in time-frame of treaty from earlier five to seven years now with automatic extension. This will provide a more stable framework for bilateral trade and promote investments in Nepal based on preferential access provided by the treaty to Nepalese products.
- As per this agreement India facilitate export under the Most Favored Nation (MFN) treatment of articles manufactured in Nepal but which do not fulfill the criteria for preferential access
October 27, 2009: India, Russia, China Trilateral Meet at Bangalore:
External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna held talks with his counterparts, Yang Jiechi of China and Sergei Lavrov of Russia met in Bangalore for trilateral talks. In this 9th Trilateral meeting India, China and Russia decided to expand their cooperation on global issues ranging from combating international terrorism and restoring stability in the volatile AfPak region to climate change and reform of international bodies.
Besides they also focused on expanded trilateral cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, agriculture and identified pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, IT and energy as key areas of cooperation.
The three foreign ministers also emphasized upon “speedy shift” in quota share in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of at least 5 percent to emerging markets and developing countries and a significant increase of at least 3 percent of voting power in the World Bank for developing and transition countries
October 27, 2009: First Indian to play World Matchplay Championships: Jeev Milkha Singh
Jeev Milkha Singh is the first Indian to play at the 16-man World Matchplay Championships. The total prize money for the 2009 Volvo World Match Play Championship is 3,250,000 pounds.
October 27, 2009: Indian warships in Indian Ocean to curb Somali Pirates:
The INS Tabar is a warship which was sent in 2008 to counter the pirates of Somalia. Further, now Indian navy will be deploying INS Shardul, a fully armed amphibious ship which can carry more than 500 troops, and the ICGS Varuna, an offshore patrol vessel armed to the teeth. The Varuna can travel 4000 nautical miles at a stretch, enough to go around the world.
October 28, 2009: India’s first indigenously designed breeder reactor by Bhavini
India’s first indigenously designed breeder reactor is being built by (Bhavini Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam ) at the Kalpakkam nuclear enclave, 80 km from Chennai. A breeder reactor breeds more material for a nuclear fission reaction than it consumes . It is a 500 MW power project to be start working by the September 2011 deadline.
October 28, 2009: Roadrunner to make HIV evolutionary tree
Roadrunner is the world fastest supercomputer. It is being deployed to analyze vast quantities of genetic sequences from HIV infected people in the hope of zeroing in on possible vaccine target areas. One Indian American scientist Tanmoy Bhattacharya is among the researchers taking up this project. This creates an evolutionary genetic family tree, known as a phylogenetic tree, to look for similarities in the acute versus chronic sequences that may identify areas where vaccines would be most effective.
