National Affairs:
On Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats
The Ministry of Environment and Forests Ministry has short listed 15 species including Great Indian Bustard and other Bustards for initiating their recovery programme. Conservationists have been requesting for launching ‘Project Bustard’. Considering the need of the hour, financial provision of Rs.10 crore for such recovery programmes have been made in the existing Centrally Sponsored Scheme – ‘Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats’. Recently 2 Great Indian Bustards were sighted at Tal Chhapar Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan in the first week of August, 2009.

Google IPL Tie Up:
Google India signs up with the Indian Premier League (IPL) to provide live streaming of all action during the third season of DLF IPL. Premier League and its licensing partner Global Cricket Ventures & Google’s agreement will enable internet browsers to access www.youtube.com/ipl for IPL matches. Google will have exclusive online rights for IPL content for two years and both Google and IPL will jointly share revenues from sponsorships and advertising on www.youtube.com/ipl and on www.iplt20.com

Bharti Walmart Agro Hub:
Bharti-Walmart Pvt Ltd is a joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and global retail major Walmart Stores. The company opens its first agricultural cooperative centre at Sirhind in Punjab. Its a part of Bharti Walmart’s direct farm program in partnership with 100 small and marginal farmers near Ludhiana, Punjab.

False Swine Flu Pandemic Media Reports of WHO
In January 2010, Wolfgang Wodarg Chairman of the health committee at the Council of Europe reportedly made claims that major firms organised a “campaign of panic” to put pressure on the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a “false pandemic” to sell vaccines. He also names it “one of the greatest medicine scandals of the century. (refer)

However WHO responded by stating that it took its duty to provide independent advice seriously and guarded against interference from outside interests. Announcing a review of its actions, WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib stated that, “Criticism is part of an outbreak cycle. We expect and indeed welcome criticism and the chance to discuss it. (refer)

Indian Government asks the WHO to effectively explain reports appearing in the media that swine flu was a false pandemic as it adversely impacted the public health measures being taken by countries. Right now an Executive Board meeting of the WHO is going on in Geneva & India’s Health secretary K Sujatha Rao called for greater transparency about terms and conditions on which international vaccine manufacturers were supplying vaccines to countries.

Education For All Global Monitoring Report
UNESCO says that India has made “rapid advances” in cutting down the numbers of school drop-outs , however still she has largest number of illiterate adults in the world. This is revealed in Education For All Global Monitoring Report which says that there are 759 million illiterate adults in the world, India still has the highest number.

India is a party to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the Government of India in fulfillment of one of the obligations of the parties to the convention, submitted a National Action Programme to Combat Desertification to the Secretariat of the UNCCD in 2001.
