National Updates:
Meeting on Operation Green Hunt:
Central and state governments are to initiate a major campaign Operation Green Hunt against the Naxalite movement. A meeting of P Chidambaram is organised with heads of four states- Jharkhand, Orissa, Bihar and West Bengal to approve the joint operation.

Haryana: Haryana Overseas Placement Bureau pacts with banks
Haryana Overseas Placement Bureau started its operation in 2007. It sends off students for higher education and employment. The bureau signs a pact with State Bank of India, the State Bank of Patiala and the Oriental Bank of Commerce to provide loan for education to the students abroad.

Sikkim: 27th Office of Reserve Bank of India
In October 2009 the RBI held a central board meeting in Sikkim, headed by bank Governor Dr D Subbarao and the decision was taken to set up a sub-office in the region. Today 27th office of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is inaugurated at Gangtok.The Gangtok RBI office will have a rural planning and credit department including a ‘financial inclusion cell’, which will coordinate with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NARBARD) and commercial banks.

Business & Economy:
Latest CSO Data on Indian Economy growth
As per the latest data released by Central Statistical Organisation, Indian economy is expected to register a growth of 7.2 per cent during this fiscal as against 6.7 per cent reported last year.
The data’s see a 6%+ expansion in various sectors except agriculture.
This growth has been attributed to the growth rates of over five per cent in the sectors of ‘mining and quarrying’, ‘manufacturing’, ‘electricity, gas and water supply’, ‘construction’, ‘trade, hotels, transport and communication’, ‘financing, insurance, real estate and business services’ and ‘community, social and personal services’,.
The CSO estimates a decline of 0.2 per cent in the GDP of ‘agriculture, forestry and fishing’ sector.
The growth in this sector was 1.6 per cent in last fiscal . The fall has been attributed to eight per cent decline expected in production of food grains and five per cent in oil seeds production.

BHEL gets Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric project order
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) bags an order worth Rs 1,016 crore for 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (PHPA), Bhutan. This is ”single largest contract” for the company in the hydro electric power generation business segment. the project is being set up by Indian Government and Bhutan Government on the basis of a bilateral agreement.
BHEL has presence in Bhutan for last 25 years and has successfully executed three Hydro Projects–336 MW Chukha, 60 MW Kurichu and 1,020 MW Tala–that accounts for nearly 95 per cent of the total power generating capacity in the country.

Gen Sarath Fonseka arrested
Sri Lanka’s defeated opposition presidential candidate Gen Sarath Fonseka arrested and the government announced he will be court-martialed for committing “military offenses.

Presidential Elections in Ukraine:
Fifth presidential election since declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 are being held in Ukraine. The President of Ukraine is elected by the citizens of Ukraine for a five-year term, on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage, by secret ballot.First phase of elections were held on 17 January and second phase on 7 February 2010. The main candidates were

  1. Viktor Yanukovych from Party of Regions and
  2. Yulia Tymoshenko from Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc.

As per newspapers of 8th February , 2010 Viktor Yanukovich heads for a slender victory.

Update: February 14, 2010: Viktor Yanukovych, with 48.95% of the popular vote, was declared President-elect and winner of the 2010 Ukrainian Presidential election.

2010 SA Tennis Open: Results
The 2010 SA Tennis Open was the 19th edition of the SA Tennis Open and was part of the ATP World Tour 250 series of the 2010 ATP World Tour. It took place in Johannesburg, South Africa from February 1 through February 7, 2010. The winners are as follows:
Singles: Feliciano López (Spain) defeated Stéphane Robert (France)
Doubles:
Rohan Bopanna (India) and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi (Pakistan)
