Food Security Bill cleared
- The Cabinet today cleared the much awaited Food Security Bill that seeks to give legal entitlement to subsidised food grains to about 64 per cent of the country’s population.
- The Bill proposes to give food security to 75 per cent of the rural population, and 50 per cent of the urban population. At least 46 per cent of the rural population would be considered priority households. In urban area, 28 per cent are under this category. The priority households would get seven kg rice and wheat per person per month at Rs three and Rs two per kg respectively. Those who come under the general category would get at least three kg at 50 per cent of the minimum support price. The cost of this subsidised food is expected to be Rs 95,000 crore.
Mother Teresa Award for Narayana Murthy
- N R Narayana Murthy, Chairman Emeritus, Infosys, awarded Mother Teresa Award by Indian Development Foundation. The Award was in recognition to Mr Murthy’s contribution as a harbinger of India s IT revolution and for his advocacy of corporate philanthropy and his own personal giving which are making a difference to thousands of lives. Mr Murthy is well-known for his pioneering work in leprosy rehabilitation work at Gulbarga and Relief work at Leprosy Colony in Bellary.
Ajit Singh sworn-in as Civil Aviation Minister
- Rashtriya Lok Dal Chief Ajit Singh, who had recently joined the United Progressive Alliance, inducted in the Union Cabinet as the Civil Aviation minister.
Poet Adam Gondvi passes away
- People’s poet Adam Gondvi (64) passed away. A committed Cultural Activist lifelong, the songs and poems of Gondvi had inspired Mass Movement countrywide for decades.

- Tropical storm Washi has killed nearly 650 people in the southern Philippines.
Himachal national park to get UNESCO stamp
The Great Himalayan National Park would soon get UNESCO World Heritage Status. The nomination sent by the state’s forest and wildlife department to the organisation was accepted and its evaluation process would take place early next year. The park is located in Kullu region in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
