Doordarshan to launch ‘India innovates’ programmes from Jan 26

• Doordarshan will launch India innovates programme based on creative activities having far reaching effect on public importance from January 26, 2012. The programme would cover creative activities having far reaching effect on public importance.
• Digitalisation work of the doordarshan would be completed by the year 2014. Once digitalisation was completed, it would help in tracking cable operators who did not air Doordarshan programmes on their network despite clearcut guidelines in this connection. Cable operators had the complusion to carry the programmes of doordarshan without any interruption.

• Nagpur woman Jyoti Amge, declared the world’s shortest woman by Guinness World Records.

Indian-origin journalist Davan Maharaj named editor of LA Times

• Davan Maharaj, the Indian-origin managing editor at LA Times has been named as the new editor and executive vice president of the Los Angeles Times. He will take the place of Russ Stanton, under whose leadership the paper to three Pulitzer Prizes.

Nancy Powell new US ambassador to India

• US President Barack Obama named Nancy Powell, a career diplomat with wide experience in South Asia, to be the ambassador to India and fill a half-year vacancy.
• Powell has served as US ambassador to Pakistan and to Nepal and holds the rank of career ambassador, a prestigious title given only to select career diplomats based on their service.
  

6-year-old becomes youngest to play school cricket in India

• At the age of six and a half years, Musheer Khan, a student of Anjuman Islam High School in Mumbai became India’s youngest cricketer when he took part in inter-school cricket.
• Musheer debuted for his school against Shailendra Education Society this week for the Giles Shield Under-14 inter-school tournament.

G Gourakishore Sharma selected to get Tagore Akademi Ratna

• Manipuri martial arts Guru G Gourakishore Sharma was among 50 prominent performing artistes of the country selected for the Tagore Akademi Ratna which carried the purse money Rs 3 lakhs.
• Karam Chaoba Singh in Sankritana (Ariba Pala), Devjani Chaliha in Manipuri dance and Abungbam Kabui in Tribal dance of Manipur were among 50 eminent artistes selected for the Tagore Akademi Puraskar which carried the purse money of Rs 1 lakh.

• The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has so far collected over Rs. 6 lakh from various mobile operators for violations of new regulations on unsolicited commercial calls and SMS.

“Carlos The Jackal” Sentenced To Life In Prison

• A French court sentenced the notorious Venezuelan militant known as Carlos the Jackal to life in prison, with a minimum of 18 years before parole, for four deadly attacks in France in the 1980s.
• His Paris trial dealt with four attacks that were seen as part of a private war Carlos waged against France to free two comrades, including his future wife, who were arrested in Paris while planning to attack the Kuwaiti embassy.
