CSIR produces Protein Enriched Biscuits for COVID-19 patients

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR-CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute) has made protein rich biscuits for COVID-19 patients. The biscuits have been sent to the COVID-19 patients in AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science).

Highlights

The CFTRI has so far supplied 500 kg of protein-rich biscuits. Also, another 500 kg of protein-rich rusks have been supplied. The usual biscuits contain 8% to 9% of protein. However, these enriched biscuits and rusks contain 14% of protein.

Significance

The biscuits will help COVID-19 patients that are recuperating. Recuperating is recovering from illness. Protein is essential for the body to fight against infection. It balances fluids and increases oxygen supply throughout the body. The biscuits have been formulated strictly adhering to FSSAI standards.

The biscuits consist of ingredients such as wheat flour, hydrogenated fat, soy protein, whey protein, milk solids and glucose.

The formula for preparing the biscuits was discovered by CSIR-CFTRI. It is to be manufactured by Seven Seas Private Limited.
