Constitutional Provisions on Hindi

• Articles 343: official language of the Union will be Hindi. The original constitution had provided that for a period of 15 years from 1949, English will continue to be used for all official purposes of the Union subject to extension of this period by parliament via law. It has been extended indefinitely since 1967.
• Article 344: initially at 5 years of commencement of constitution and thereafter every 10 years, the President will constitute Parliamentary Language Committee to recommend on making the progressive use of the Hindi language for the official purposes of the union.
• Article 351: It shall be the duty of the Union to promote the spread of the Hindi language.
