Commonwealth Games 2022- Day 1 updates
The 2022 Commonwealth Games was officially inaugurated on July 28, 2022, following a grand opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. During the event, Indian contingent was led by PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh. Neeraj Chopra will not take part in the CWG 2022 due to an injury.
- CWG 2022 is set to become the biggest and most expensive sporting event in United Kingdom, since 2012 London Olympics.
- Prince Charles was the chief guest of opening ceremony.
- Queen’s Baton reached the CWG village in Birmingham on July 27.
- Opening ceremony was entirely created by British screenwriter Steven Knight.
- In the Games, athletes from more than 72 nations and territories will take part.
- Youngest member of Indian contingent is 14-year-old squash player Anahat Singh. He will play against Jada Ross of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
- In the last edition of CWG, India had won 66 medals. Last edition was held at Gold Coast in Australia.
On Day 1 of the CWG; a contingent of 210 athletes, including 106 male and 104 female, will be competing in 16 events. Women’s cricket is making debut in the CWG this year, through T20s. India will play against Australia on Day 1; who is T20 world champion. Indian badminton team will open the game today. Apart from that, 2018 CWG gold medallist will also start their game, against Pakistan. Indian women’s hockey team is also scheduled to start game against Ghana.
