Colombian President Juan Santos receives Nobel Prize for Peace
Colombian President Juan Santos has accepted the Nobel Peace Prize 2016 at Oslo, Norway. The Nobel Committee had selected Santos for his resolute efforts to bring the 50-year old conflict with the Revolutionary Forces of Colombia to an end by signing a peace deal with the group. The civil war had taken toll of 2,20,000 lives and had displaced around six million people.
Santos was named as the peace laureate in October just a few days after the previous peace deal was rejected by the people of Colombia in a referendum. The announcement of the prize was a great push for the people and Santos to do whatever possible to achieve a deal which is acceptable to all. In a speech from Oslo, Santos said, “It is much more difficult to achieve peace than to wage war. The real prize is the peace in Colombia”.
