The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) report is published by German Watch, New Climate Institute and Climate Action Network.

What are the key findings of Climate Change Performance Index, 2021?

The CCPI left the top three spots vacant. This is because none of the countries had performed well to make it to the top three ranks. Denmark was placed at fourth place followed by Sweden and Norway in fifth and sixth places respectively. UK and Morocco occupied seventh and eighth position respectively. On the other hand, USA, Australia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Kazakhstan were the worst performers according to the index.

What are the rankings of countries in CCPI?

China occupied 37th position. It slipped by four places as compared to 2020. The European Union slid by six places in 2021 as compared to the previous year. The United Kingdom occupied seventh position. It had slipped two positions as compared to 2020. Globally, the Scandinavian countries performed well.

How was CCPI calculated?

In 2021, the CCPI evaluated the European Union and sixty countries. They are generated by more than 90% of global greenhouse emissions. The CCPI ranked the countries based on 14 indicators. These 14 indicators were grouped under four categories. They were renewable energy (20% of overall score), greenhouse gas emissions (40% of overall score), climate policy (20%) and energy use (20%). What is India’s ranking in Climate Change Performance Index?

India was placed at tenth rank with a score of 69.22. India was termed as a medium level performer in renewable energy category. However, the report said that India is benefitting from low per – capita emissions. According to the report, India is on track to meet its 2030 emission targets. It is close to achieve its Nationally Determined Contributions. The performance of India was rated high in Green House Gas emissions, climate policy and energy use categories. The report raised concerns around the fact none of the Indian states have announced phase out. Also, it pointed out that India has increased its coal-driven initiatives after 2015 Paris Agreement. The report recommended India to set Net Zero target for 2050. India needs to do more on climate adaptation, climate vulnerability, resilience building.
