Climate and Environmental Emergency declared by European Union Parliament

Urging all countries under the European Union to commit to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions on Thursday, November 28, 2019, The European Parliament declared a global ” Climate and Environmental Emergency”.

The resolution was passed with a comfortable majority of 429 votes in favour to 225 votes against the declaration. The Parliament also called on all European Union countries to urgently phase out all indirect and direct fossil fuel subsidies by 2020.

Outside Europe, only Canada, Bangladesh and Argentina have declared a climate emergency.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), COP25 is scheduled to be held in Madrid, Spain from 2-13 December 2019.

The European Parliament is one of the seven institutions and the legislative branch of the European Union.
