Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024

The Chanakya Defence Dialogue is an important international seminar hosted by the Indian Army. The second edition will take place on October 24 and 25, 2024, at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. This year’s theme is “Drivers in Nation Building: Fuelling Growth Through Comprehensive Security.” The dialogue aims to integrate security into national and international policymaking, encouraging sustainable growth.

Purpose of the Dialogue

The primary goal is to discuss how comprehensive security can drive national development. The event will feature policymakers, strategic thinkers, and defence experts from India and abroad. Notable speakers include representatives from the United States, Russia, Israel, and Sri Lanka.

Keynote Address

Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will inaugurate the event. He will launch the Indian Army’s Green Initiative 1.0 and Digitisation of IA 1.0. His keynote address will focus on “India’s Vision for Development and Security,” denoting the role of comprehensive security in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Expert Sessions Overview

The dialogue will consist of six expert-led sessions. Each session will tackle critical aspects of comprehensive security.

Session 1: Geopolitical Dynamics

This session will explore the changing geopolitical landscape. It will focus on strategic partnerships and national interests. Key discussions will include India’s role in the Indo-Pacific and its relationships with global powers.

Session 2: Economic Development Strategies

This session will examine the link between economic development and national security. Panelists will discuss how a resilient economy supports a strong defence posture. Topics will include economic reforms and boosting domestic industrial capacity.

Session 3: Environmental Sustainability

This session will address the balance between economic growth and ecological concerns. Discussions will centre on how sustainable development can enhance national security. The military’s role in environmental preservation will also be brought to light.

Session 4: Social Cohesion and Inclusive Growth

This session will focus on social unity as a pillar of national security. It will explore how to strengthen internal security through inclusive development. Strategies to integrate marginalized communities will be discussed.

Session 5: Technology and Security

This session will look at the integration of emerging technologies in national security. Topics will include artificial intelligence and cyber warfare. Ethical considerations regarding technology use will also be addressed.

Session 6: Future of Land Warfare

The final session will focus on land warfare and the Indian Army’s technological advancements. Discussions will include lessons from global military practices and the importance of homegrown defence technologies.

Special Addresses

The second day will feature special addresses from Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, and Ms. Ruchira Kamboj, Former Permanent Representative of India to the UN. They will discuss India’s space sector and its evolving position in a multipolar world.

Closing Address

The dialogue will conclude with a closing address by Lt Gen N. S. Raja Subramani. He will summarise the key takeaways and reaffirm the Indian Army’s commitment to ensuring a secure and prosperous future for India.
