Challenges and Efforts in Recovering the Titanic Submersible
Teams from around the world are engaged in a race against time to locate a missing submersible and its crew in the vast depths of the North Atlantic.
Limited Oxygen Supply
One of the primary challenges confronting the teams is the limited oxygen supply aboard the submersible. With each passing moment, the urgency to locate the vessel and its five-person crew intensifies.
Vast Search Area
The search operation covers an expansive area of the North Atlantic, spanning approximately 7,600 square miles (20,000 square kilometers). Navigating this extensive region to a depth of over two miles is a formidable task.
Challenging Underwater Conditions
The bottom of the ocean presents a harsh and inhospitable environment. It is characterized by pitch-black darkness, bone-chilling cold, undulating terrain, and a seabed covered in mud. These conditions make the search operation exceptionally challenging.
Missing Crew Members
On board the submersible when it vanished were British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani tycoon Shahzada Dawood, and Dawood’s son Suleman. The search teams are committed to locating the vessel and ensuring the safety of the crew members.
Operator: OceanGate Expeditions
The submersible named Titan is operated by OceanGate Expeditions, an undersea exploration company based in Everett, Washington. Their expertise and resources are being utilized to coordinate the search efforts.
Extensive Search Area
The search area is equivalent to the size of the state of Connecticut or approximately half the size of Belgium. Locating a relatively small submersible within such a vast expanse requires meticulous efforts and comprehensive search strategies.
Challenges of Sub-to-Sub Rescue
A sub-to-sub rescue is unlikely if the submersible is on the ocean floor due to limited capabilities of reaching the depths comparable to the Titanic wreck. Additionally, the lack of towing power makes the retrieval of the vessel extremely challenging.
Difficulty in Spotting a Bobbing Submersible
If the submersible is bobbing at the ocean’s surface, locating it becomes akin to finding a needle in a haystack. The partially submerged vessel, roughly the size of a van, is difficult to spot amidst the vast ocean. The search teams face the additional challenge of mobilizing ships and equipment to the search area, which takes time.
Exploring the Unknown
Our knowledge of the bottom of the ocean is relatively limited compared to the moon’s surface, as extensive surveying has not been conducted. This adds a level of uncertainty to the search operation, as there may be various unknown factors and obstacles to overcome.
