CERC Approval for Flue-gas Desulphurisation Device at Singrauli
CERC has given approval for the construction of a flue gas desulphurisation device at Reliance’s plant in Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh.
About the Proposal
Reliance had approached the CERC or Central Electricity Regulatory Committee for approval for spending 1,660 crore INR on a flue gas desulphurisation device at its Singrauli plant in Madhya Pradesh. This would allow the company to meet environmental standards and recover the amount from its customers through tariff hikes.
Flue Gas
Flue gas refers to the exhaust from combustion at thermal power plants that are released through the flues. Flue gas composition depends on what is being burnt- but generally contains oxides of nitrogen, sulphur dioxide and also particulate matter.
Flue Gas Desulphurisation
Flue gas desulphurisation is the process by which the sulphur dioxide is removed from the flue gas. It is essential for reducing air pollution. This is because sulphur dioxide is a toxic gas and a major air pollutant. It is most associated with acid rains.
