Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023

In a significant development, the lower house of the Indian Parliament has successfully passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, advancing the establishment of a crucial central tribal university in Telangana.

The bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 4, seeks to amend the Central Universities Act, 2009, governing the creation of central universities dedicated to teaching and research across different states. Today, the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Education, Subhas Sarkar, moved the bill for further consideration and passage.

  1. Establishment of ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’: The primary focus of the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, is the establishment of the ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’ in Telangana.

Mandate from Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, which led to the formation of Telangana as a separate state, mandates the central government to establish a tribal university in Telangana. The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill aligns with this legislative mandate, reflecting the government’s commitment to fulfilling regional educational needs.
