CCMB and CDFD inks MoU on Genetic Disease Diagnostics

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) to improve understanding and to enable better ways diagnosis and treatment of human genetic disorders.

Key Highlights of MoU

Both CCMB and CDFD institutes have mutually agreed to undertake training and educational activities in genetic diagnostics.

Objective of MoU:

  • To provide quality DNA-based diagnostic services to public at lower costs
  • To develop newer diagnostic methods
  • To engage in scientific research for improving understanding of human genetic disorders

Need: Each year more than 50 lakh babies are born with genetic disease in India. The burden of genetic disorders has its effects on economic and social structure of society.

Importance: Most of genetic disorders are presently untreatable and for those which can be treated, treatment is very expensive. Therefore only option to address genetic disorder problem is preventive approach which requires prenatal diagnosis and genetic counselling.
